Follow‐up ANOVAs revealed significant differences in relative concentrations of three of the four compounds (methylhistidine, citrulline, and d‐glucarate) among the five study species ( F 4,8.93 = 9.63, p < .001; F 4,11.26 = 7.39, p < .001; F 4,12.87 = 18.23, p < .001, respectively) and a marginally significant difference in relative concentration of creatinol o‐phosphate among the study species (F 4,8.98 = 2.46, p = .07; Figure 5 ). 4 DISCUSSION In this study, we investigated the differences in diaspore morphology, elaiosome fatty acids, and elaiosome phytochemisty among five species of Trillium with different levels of attractiveness to seed‐dispersing ants in the southern Appalachian region of North America.
