These data show that scientific research on pathogenic microorganisms is affected by the level of attention focused on associated diseases and emergency situations. The quantity of pathogenic microorganism-related literature is relatively small in China with an increasing trend towards investigation of certain pathogenic microorganisms The total Chinese literature relating to pathogenic microorganisms is much lower than that of the United States (Tables 1 , 2 ; Fig. 1 ).
