Lesions of mature mucosal fibrosis and mucosal atrophy are not likely to be relevant if the biopsies were taken in the midst of an acute episode of classical colitis; on the other hand, they may be extremely significant as a footprint of previous inflammatory disease if the biopsies were taken, for example, 2 weeks after the last episode (which is often the case just because of scheduling appointments with a specialist).
