The presence of a large number of clostridial endospores (more than 5 per oil field) on Diff-Quik–stained smears may be significant, but a positive fecal enterotoxin assay (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] or reverse passive latex agglutination) is likely more significant.
