In the short run, our data revealed marginally significant positive main effects of prosocial lottery choice (0.14 SD, correlational) ( Table 1 , column 1) and of saving a life (0.06 SD, causal) ( Table 1 , column 1), while long-term happiness was swayed by a significant and sizable negative causal effect of saving a life (−0.26 SD) ( Table 1 , column 4).
