Overall yearly case-fatality ratios of the 45 infectious diseases were highest among men older than 20 years compared with their female counterparts, and they were lowest among children younger than 10 years and were highest among elderly patients older than 80 years, showing an increasing trend with rising age ( figure 1B ; appendix p 7 ).
