In view of (1) the large number of mammalian cysteine S -conjugate β-lyases identified to date, (2) their overlapping specificities, (3) their widespread occurrence in tissues, (4) their presence in different subcellular compartments (e.g., cytosol, mitochondria, and peroxisomes), and (5) the increasingly recognized wide scope of these reactions, the potential of these enzymes for generating toxic products in different subcellular compartments, not only in the kidneys but also in other tissues, is highly significant.
