After adjusting for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), level of education, smoking status and pack-years, subjects in the highest tertile for CMV serology (hereafter referred to as high CMV serology) had a 21% increase in all-cause mortality risk compared to subjects in the lowest tertile, although the association was of borderline significance ( table 2 and figure 1a ).
