While there was a nonsignificant trend towards an increased proportion of small-sized unmyelinated axons <0.2 μm2 (0.32 ± 0.15 vs. 0.24 ± 0.07; p = 0.08), there was a significant smaller proportion of medium-sized unmyelinated axons between 0.2 μm2 and 0.8 μm2 (0.59 ± 0.12 vs. 0.66 ± 0.08; p = 0.04) in the sciatic nerves of STZ-diabetic mice.
