14 A meta-analysis of five cohort studies found a marginally significant association between decreased kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ) and incidence of cognitive impairment or dementia (relative risk 1.28, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.65), and a significant association between albuminuria and dementia (relative risk 1.35, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.73). 15 Given that both CKD and dementia incur a healthcare burden, it is important to understand the association between CKD status or stage and diagnosis of dementia in real-world clinical practice.
