A possible explanation for this response pattern might be that slightly positive stimuli grab the lowest level of attention as they are more often encountered in real life social situations and thus perceived as a kind of “social default.” While we cannot make strong inferences on this issue as direct comparisons between the beta estimates of the four response options failed to reach significance, this observation might still serve as a starting point for future studies to inform hypotheses on such nonlinear relationships between brain activation and rating of socially relevant signals.
