The pooled mortality estimates for the 24 participating European countries or federal states showed an increasing trend during the first weeks of March 2020, and an excess mortality level higher than four z-scores above the baseline (defined as ‘substantial excess’) in week 11 (9–15 March)/2020 ( Figure 1 ).
