By counting the number of SMCs that transformed into a macrophage phenotype in vascular sections of diabetic-amputated patients and measuring the RAGE concentration in blood vessels and serum CML levels, we found that the CML level and the phenotype-switched vascular smooth muscle content are correlated, which is a highly significant finding.
