Such flow in normal brains is not significant compared to that from high flow rate infusions, but it may be significant in either chronic infusions or, more pertinently, in brains with pathological states of disrupted blood–brain barrier (BBB), where there are endogenous sources of fluid as well as serum proteins from the vasculature that alter the oncotic pressure in the interstitium [ 43 ].
