Socially disadvantaged people tend to present to healthcare services more often, because they experience a greater burden of disease, 26 however in terms of IID, some UK-based evidence suggests that there may not be significant inequalities in IID incidence in the community. 9 This points to alternative explanations for the social gradients in emergency IID admission rates that have been observed – for example inequalities in disease severity.
