The absolute magnitude of the skin colour shift induced by DHA is not constant, but depends on the initial skin colour, as evidenced by the highly significant negative correlations between the colour shifts and the base colour for each dimension (for L *: Pearson correlation coefficient r = -0.47; a *: r = -0.51; b *: r = -0.67; p < 0.001 for all L *, a *, and b *) ( Fig 5A ).
