While more attention has been placed on mitochondrial electron leak and consequent free radical generation, proton leak is a highly significant aspect of mitochondrial energetics, as it accounts for more than 20% of oxygen consumption in the liver ( Brand, 2005 ) and 35–50% of that in muscle in the resting state ( Rolfe and Brand, 1996 ).
