Genes that are differentially expressed between sacs producing calcified and non-calcified pearls are enriched for genes involved in 96 biological processes ( Supplementary Table S3 , 10 most highly significant shown in Table 2 ), and many of these were associated with cilia or microtubule function, suggesting cellular cytoskeletal elements contribute to pearl formation and quality.
