A recent study that examined the short- and long-term effects of GDP on traffic deaths in 18 OECD countries in 1960–2011 found that although cyclical periods of strong economic growth led to an immediate increase in traffic deaths, since the mid-1970s this short-term effect has been outweighed by a much stronger protective long-term effect with a decreasing trend observed in death rates 26 .
