Random effects were highly significant in each of the 3 models (H: LR χ 2 = 1,264, df = 1, P < 0.001; S: LR χ 2 = 177.21, df = 1, P < 0.001, V: LR χ 2 = 248.9, df = 1, P < 0.001), suggesting that a large portion of the variance unexplained by sex, portion, and size (i.e., the fixed effects) depended on some unconsidered features of the individuals, especially for the hue.
