The fully replicated soil temperature measurements performed in summer corroborated these results, showing a marginally significant effect of cover type on average summer soil temperature determined by the thermal cells ( F 3,39 = 2.20, p = 0.10; Table 1 ) and a highly significant cover effect on afternoon soil temperature (representing approximate daily maximum temperature; F 3,39 = 32.10, p < 0.001; Table 1 ).
