A meta-analysis of 13 prospective studies, with 397,296 participants, showed that wine consumption was associated with a significant reduction of the risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with a pooled relative risk of 0.85, whereas beer or spirits consumption led to a slight trend towards a decreasing risk for T2DM (relative risk 0.96 and 0.95, respectively) [ 70 ].
