Residual sludge disposal costs and environmental impact may be significant, and decreasing such costs, as well as the consumption of energy required for dewatering and drying, is a main issue for ensuring sustainable and safe disposal of sludge, having in mind the recent ban of some disposal options, such as landfilling, in many countries in Europe.
