Enucleation severs RGC axons in the optic nerve, and explants maintained in culture ex vivo , demonstrated a progressive RGC loss and nuclear shrinkage observed within 12 h, with highly significant, reproducible RGC loss at 3 days ex vivo ( Fig. 2 A and B, Supplementary Fig. 1 A and B ).
