These associations were highly significant for all three measures of selection, including the number of negatively selected residues (β = 0.68, 95% CI 0.42–0.92, P < 0.001; Fig. 4 a), number of positively selected residues (β = 0.70, 95% CI 0.28–1.13, P = 0.001; Fig. 4 b), and dN / dS ratios (β = 0.67, 95% CI 0.26–1.08, P = 0.002; Fig. 4 c) (Additional file 1 : Table S1).
