Matsubayashi and colleagues (2013) examined panel data after natural disasters of various sizes, such as typhoons, floods, and earthquakes that occurred in Japan between 1982 and 2010, and found increased suicide rates among elderly women 3–4 years after the disaster, whereas they found a decreasing trend after an initial rapid increase among elderly men.
