This effect was highly significant and explained large portions of the variability of cellular activity in the two populations, with a slope of −0.0238 ± 0.0009 fmol cell −1 day −1 μm −1 ( R 2 = 0.69) and −0.0594 ± 0.0083 fmol cell −1 day −1 μm −1 ( R 2 = 0.27) for archaea and bacteria, respectively ( Fig. 2A ).
