At the time of these initial approvals, results of only two randomized placebo-controlled trials were available: a prematurely terminated and underpowered study by Wang et al., which found no statistically significant effect of remdesivir on time to clinical improvement or mortality rate [ 5 ]; and NIAID’s ACTT-1 trial, which found a statistically significant shorter time to clinical improvement in the remdesivir group, while the effect for mortality fell just short of statistical significance [ 6 ].
