Results In the three years prior to the experiment (2008–2010), mean DNA yields from samples taken from the field for bare fallow, arable and grassland were 21, 95 and 298 μg g -1 dry soil, respectively with no significant differences between replicate plots within each treatment and highly significant differences between treatments ( F 2,18 = 646, P < 0.001, all means significantly different at α = 0.05) and no interaction between treatments and years, indicating that the effects of treatments and time were independent.
