The role of wild animals may not be significant for some diseases if the transmission cycle between humans and arthropods sustains the pathogen within human populations (e.g., lymphatic filariasis), or the pathogens have been readily spread within the humans without an animal host (e.g., HIV/AIDS, SARS) ( Table 2 ). 3.3.3 Limited scope of zoonotic disease monitoring Many wild animals as hosts of zoonotic pathogens are being traded and kept in captivity in China, including rats or other small rodent species as primary hosts for several zoonotic infections.
