We previously showed that (i) these levels of colocalization with a Golgi marker are highly significant and not a random occurrence, as colocalization is detected in fewer than 35% of cells expressing an epitope-tagged version of the ER resident protein TbEMC3 (Tb927.10.4760) ( 50 ) and (ii) it is unlikely to be a result of saturation of the retention system for ER resident proteins because overexpression of TbEPT, another ER-localized membrane protein ( 59 ), did not result in Golgi localization ( 50 ).
