Additionally, hemorrhage may be significant if the internal thoracic or intercostal arteries are injured, which has been associated with lung evisceration and has a mortality rate of 40%. 15 In this case the patient sustained a penetrating injury to the chest at the ninth ICS, which is not only concerning for intrathoracic injuries but also intra-abdominal injuries.
