To this end, we correlated the rated propensity of each of our 80 traits to emerge spontaneously (our gauge of “innateness”) with its classification as “thinking.” The correlation was highly significant and negative, r (78) = −.680, p < .0001—the stronger the association of a trait with “thinking,” the less likely it was to be seen as spontaneously emerging (i.e., innate).
