Irf8 KO mice revealed a strikingly altered rMG distribution and morphology compared with wild-type (WT) animals, characterised by slightly reduced MG numbers in the inner plexiform layer (IPL, Irf8 WT: 104 ± 7 cells/mm 2 , Irf8 KO: 88 ± 5 cells/mm 2 , p = 0.09) and highly significant decrease of cell numbers in the outer plexiform layer (OPL, Irf8 WT: 116 ± 6 cells/mm 2 ; Irf8 KO: 43 ± 1 cells/mm 2 , p < 0.0001, Fig. 2 B,C).
