While the βThal + RBCs had control levels of proteasome activities in the cytosol ( Figure 1 A), they showed a marginal trend for higher CH-like and CASP-like values in the membrane from mid-storage onwards (e.g., CASP-like day 21: 95,742 ± 38,444 vs. 70,122 ± 29,524 RFU/mg of protein, βThal + vs. control, p = 0.052) ( Figure 1 B).
