Discussion The present study performed the first systematic review of the literature describing the consequences of early thymectomy on long-term functioning of the immune system and observed that children who underwent thymectomy in the first years of life have reduced numbers of total T cells, CD4+, CD8+, naïve T cells, TRECs and CD31, a decreased diversity of the TCR repertoire and an increased expression of Ki67 and IL-7 compared to controls in the first five years after surgical procedure as an overall trend.
