Human clinical trials using the antioxidant pentoxifylline as adjunctive treatment for cerebral malaria showed conflicting results ranging from a significant decrease in shortening of comma resolution time and death ( Das et al., 2003 ), to small marginally significant effects ( Di Perri et al., 1995 ), to no effect with a non-significant increase of death in the pentoxifylline-treated group ( Lell et al., 2010 ).
