Correlation between expression levels and total wiring length is highest among the quantities we analyzed, but also (in descending order) maximal wiring length, the out-degree, and the average wiring length show highly significant positive correlations with gene expression levels (see Supplementary Table 1 ), with the maximal wiring length being, for a given regulator, the maximal spatial distance to its target genes.
