We are observing an increasing trend in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in the USA and worldwide. 3 Insulin resistance and the associated elevated circulating insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia) confer higher risks of type 2 diabetes 4 and for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, 5 but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
