7 Myopia is a highly significant problem, not only because of its high prevalence, but also because of it medical burden including pathologic complications such as myopic macular degeneration, choroidal neovascularization, retinal breaks and detachment, cataract, and glaucoma that contribute to visual morbidity in all ages, gender, and ethnicity. 8 A person who becomes blind due to myopia at a young age suffers more years of blindness than a person becoming blind from cataract.
