It has been strongly suggested that researchers may still proceed with mediation analysis, even when the direct relationships are non-significant as the indirect effects may be significant regardless of the lack of direct associations between the independent and dependent variables (Little et al., 2011, Reizer, 2019; Shrout & Bolger, 2002).
