The proxy for HPV might be accurate enough because approximately 80% of HPV-related cancers are caused by HPV [ 18 , 38 ]; the proxy for smoking- or hormone-related cancers might be inaccurate because the proportion of malignancies caused by these risk factors are highly uncertain and there may be significant unmeasured confounders.
