In previous studies, the frequency of using physical restraint varied, from 4.5 to 9.4% for admitted patients in Europe [ 8 ] and has been higher in Mainland China (51.3% of all patients) [ 19 ], while the reform of mental health law in China seems to have led to a decreasing trend in the use of restraints in psychiatric hospitals (from 30.7% to 22.4%) [ 18 ].
