The GBD Study from 2015 [ 7 ] reports ambient PM 2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) as the fifth-ranking mortality risk factor in 2015, which amounts to about 4.2 million deaths, and 103.1 million DALYs in 2015 and it found an increasing trend of deaths attributable to ambient PM 2.5 from 1990 to 2015.
