This suggests that phytoplanktonic cells reach a sufficient level of nutrients to start thriving (Anderson, 1969 ; Beckmann & Hense, 2007 ; Gong et al., 2015 ; Hense & Beckmann, 2008 ; Letelier et al., 2004 ; Mignot et al., 2014 ; Varela et al., 1994 ), as also revealed by progressive erosion of the nitracline supported by a decreasing trend of nitracline steepness until late summer (supportive information: Figure S24 ).
