Globally, sunflower productivity has shown a decreasing trend during the past decade, mainly because of lower resource use efficiency, reduced nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), extreme climatic conditions, and increased pest infestations and diseases due to imbalanced (N) fertilizer application (Ozer et al. 2004 ; Nasim et al. 2017 ; Tovar et al. 2021 ; Rahman et al. 2021 ; Perveen et al. 2021 ).
