The significant high density of fibroblasts in nodules suggested that the fibroblasts in nodular areas have higher metabolic activity than the surrounding area, because there was a highly significant correlation between the number of fibroblasts and the ATP level in our previous study. 1 A large quantity of ATP is necessary to biosynthesize collagen fibers.
