13 Between 2000 and 2010 a decreasing trend of these bacteremic events was observed in parallel to a reduction in mortality due to pneumonia among the Chilean elderly patients (Pearson coefficient −0.70, data not shown). 14 Death rate due to pneumonia decreased from 324 to 222 per 100,000 inhabitants in this age group, and it is possible that the decline observed in our work is somehow mirroring a global trend in Chile.
