We found that at 3 h post LPS, the dorsal vagal complex of the brainstem consisting of the interconnected network of the AP, the NTS and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus showed highly significant increases in both the intensity and number of cells expressing FOS in all three components (8-fold for the NTS, 32-fold for the AP and 10-fold for the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus; Fig. 2c–g and Extended Data Fig. 3a ).
