However, there is an increasing trend in Italy, which could be associated with two factors: first, the reporting performance of the VL system in Italy, although acceptable, varies from region to region, while CL is certainly under-notified nationally because it often does not necessitate hospitalization; and second, several health centers specializing in infectious diseases are available regionally, consequently the diagnosis of Leishmaniasis is not centralized.
